I always have some reluctance when selling new work. On the one hand when a piece is sold it is encouraging, a validation of sorts. Someone has thought the work was worth their hard earned dollars. On the other hand all the time spent in the making makes each piece a kind of sign post along the path that makes me want to keep them. And when sold the money comes in and goes out and just the pictures remain.

Small Tables

We needed a small table, one to go at the end of the couch. My first design was the table on the left, making use of a beautiful 30" cherry plank for the top that I had in the shop. I don't recall what inspired the web like aprons and shelf. I do recall the countless hours of hand sanding all the openings. If I were to pick a style I'd call it "formal organic" and for me it has an Asian vibe. This table was included in the Art of the State 2022 exhibit at the PA State Museum in Harrisburg. It sold from the show.

So now I still needed a table. I'd been sitting on a graphic design I liked that I hoped to someday do in marquetry. And that inspired this work though I wound up using veneering and inlay. The veneer is Bocote, a hardwood from Central America that I had never heard of before. The inlay is spalted maple with paduuk stringing. The table framework is ebonized walnut. The lower stretchers are bent laminations.

I'm pleased that the two tables are so different.
