I always have some reluctance when selling new work. On the one hand when a piece is sold it is encouraging, a validation of sorts. Someone has thought the work was worth their hard earned dollars. On the other hand all the time spent in the making makes each piece a kind of sign post along the path that makes me want to keep them. And when sold the money comes in and goes out and just the pictures remain.

Krenovian Whiskey Cabinet
walnut, maple
68"h x 28"w x 13"dp

It started with a board in my shop that I thought would make handsome door panels. It got me thinking of the work of James Krenov whose cabinets often showcased unusual beautiful woods.

James Krenov (1920 - 2009) was one of the most influential woodworkers of my generation. He wrote several books, including The Impractical Cabinetmaker, that promoted an uncompromising approach, the value of handwork, and a deep appreciation for wood. His writings and work were an inspiration to a multitude of crafts people. His signature piece was a cabinet on stand.

This piece is not a replica of a particular piece but is most definitely "inspired by" or "in the style of." It uses some of Krenov's preferred construction methods and details but it is still an original work that is designed with a whiskey connoisseur in mind. It is a beautiful cabinet to keep a prized collection under lock and key. It is a place to pour a taste for a friend.

The door and lower shelf panels are from a walnut plank that has stood in the corner of my shop for 15 years. It is unusual in its gray/blue coloring. The case and stand are walnut. The back is maple. The flush drawer pulls are my own design. This is a unique cabinet that will never be duplicated.

For sale: $3000.00
